                                 MEDICAL CODING.

Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes. A medical coder is a health information professional whose main duties are to analyse medical record and standard codes using a classification system. A medical coder may use a set of published codes on medical diagnosis and procedure such as International Classification of Diseases (ICD), the Healthcare Common Procedural Coding system (HCPCS) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) for reporting to the health insurance provider of the recipient care.

Diagnosis codes are key to describing a patient’s condition or injury, as well as social determinants of health and other patient characteristics. The industry uses the International Classification of Diseases to capture diagnosis codes for billing purposes. There are more than 70,000 unique identifiers in the ICD-10-CM code set alone. The World Health Organization (WHO) maintains the ICD coding system, which is used internationally in modified formats. For example, G93.7 denotes Reye's Syndrome.

Reye's syndrome is a rare but serious condition that causes swelling in the liver and brain. Reye's syndrome most often affects children and teenagers recovering from a viral infection, most commonly the flu or chickenpox. Early symptoms include rapid breathing, vomiting and severe fatigue. Symptoms such as confusion, seizure and loss of consciousness need emergency treatment. There's no specific treatment for Reye's syndrome beyond supportive care and aggressive monitoring for complications.

Aspirin has been linked with Reye's syndrome, so use caution when giving aspirin to children or teenagers for fever or pain. Though aspirin is approved for use in children older than age 3, children and teenagers recovering from chickenpox or flu- like symptoms should never take aspirin.

The exact cause of Reye's syndrome is unknown, although several factors may play a role in its development. Reye's syndrome seems to be triggered by using aspirin to treat a viral illness or infection particularly flu (influenza) and chickenpox  in children and teenagers who have an underlying fatty acid oxidation disorder.

With a help of a simple code we can learn a lot about a patient's condition and their requirements.
